Metals pro Climate (Metalle pro Klima) – success stories and precise visions are at the core of this brief statement. Metalle pro Klima is an initiative which presents and highlights the achievements and potential of the NF metals industry.

Initiative with Objectives

Leading companies of the NF metals industry have joined the ‚Metalle pro Klima’ initiative launched by WirtschaftsVereinigung Metalle (WVM). They are committed to knowledge- and technology-based climate protection. Successful climate protection is realized on three levels:
- Progress in efficient and optimised systems engineering reduces the emissions of climate-relevant trace gases in production.
- Production-oriented climate protection is being increasingly replaced by productoriented strategies.
- Commitment to recycling closes the lifecycle loop and saves natural resources.
Product-related strategies will remain important in future. NF metals offer much potential to reduce power consumption and emissions of climate gases via material properties and usage. Our successful measures set standards for others. Power and resource efficiency, as well as climate protection, must increasingly become part of products.

NF Metals: Exemplary and Successful

Light and heavy metals already provide examples of the diversified potential of productrelated climate protection, e. g. in transportation, in communication technology, and in the use of renewable energy sources.
- Demand for mobility-related energy decreases by using light metals.
- Quality of life and technical progress are closely linked with the use of electricity. NF metals are the prerequisites.
- New materials and alloys improve the capability and lifespan of products –
the energy and climate balance of products benefit from this.
- Closing the raw material lifecycle loop by efficient recycling is the way to a
CO2-free and resource-saving product cycle.
- Miniaturisation of units and components reduces demand for resources and hence emissions relevant to the climate.
The members of the ‚Metalle pro Klima’ initiative are already providing actual experiences and results.

Industry – Pioneering in Climate Protection

The use of electricity and raw materials is indivisibly connected to climate protection and natural resources. Sustainable strategies are called for. The industry holds a leading position. The CO2 emissions of the German industry have been reduced by 34 per cent since 1990, making it a pillar of the German climate protection plan. With its study on the costs of protecting the climate the Federation of the German Industries has successfully proven that Industry is part of the remedy for the protection of the climate. The economic analysis of the currently available climate protection technologies gained high recognition, both on national and international level.

Climate Protection is a Knowledge- and Technology-Based Task

With this initiative the NF metals industry demonstrates what has already been achieved for climate policy and what potential exists. The NF metals industry pursues a knowledge- and technology-based approach, which combines prosperity and development with effective climate protection and environmental-friendly resource use. The members of the ‚Metalle pro Klima’ initiative research, develop and manufacture in close cooperation with their customers for a climate-friendly future.

Demand for New Concepts

The international community of states must present its climate balance up to now by 2012, when the first Kyoto period ends. The search for a fair and efficient plan to succeed the expiring Kyoto Protocol is fully underway. With the ‘Metalle pro Klima’ initiative, the NF metals industry wants to put positive results and suggestions up for discussion and give specific impetus to the sector. The opportunities and risks of a national climate policy will also be identified. Our standards are high - as is our ambition!
