With improved measurement technology, newly developed process control, an automatic anode effect quenching strategy, optimized operation processes
as well as preventive maintenance, the PFC emissions have been decreased by approximately 90 % by now, and therefore the voluntary commitment has been exceeded considerably.
Perfluorinated hydrocarbons (PFC) such as tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane
(C2F6) are climate-relevant gases which amplify the greenhouse gas effect. It is therefore a challenge for the aluminum industry to reduce the production
of these gases.
With this in mind, TRIMET ALUMINIUM AG agreed in 1997– together with all smelting works in Germany – on a voluntary commitment to the former environmental minister Angela Merkel to reduce PFC emissions by at least 50 % by 2005.
