In the packaging industry, aluminium is used due to its particularly favourable material properties. High-grade protective and barrier properties reduce loss and
spoilage of delicate food, drinks and pharmaceuticals. This preserves valuable resources, saves energy and contributes further to climate protection with efficient
packaging solutions.
Recycling aluminium saves raw material and energy. Achieving high recycling rates equals a significant positive contribution to climate protection. Some calculations were made by a German aluminium packaging recycling company (DAVR) in which
Hydro and other aluminium companies are partners. Recycling aluminium saves greenhouse gases in an annual amount of about 420,000 t of so-called CO2 equivalents. This equals saving fuel for ca. 170,000 automobiles on German streets and roads.
The calculation is based on the recycling rates of aluminium-containing packaging (more than 80 %) which have been achieved over the past years in Germany. Expenditures for collection, treatment and recycling as well as occurring material losses were taken into consideration.
Together with other aluminium enterprises and customers, Hydro promotes the recycling of aluminium packaging via a network of more than 20 national organisations. Its activities are overseen and coordinated by the market group ‘Packaging’ of
the European Aluminium Association (EAA).
